A Brief History of Burlington, NC
Founded in 1857, Burlington NC was initially known as the town of company shops due to the amount of stores that the North Carolina Railroad Company established around town. In 1887, the town was renamed Burlington and later on in 1893 it was incorporated as a city.
Burlington saw an economic boom around the turn of the century when a small textile business grew and ended up employing over 15,000 people. Nowadays, the company is called Burlington Industries and is headquartered in nearby Greensboro.
