Kernersville’s history started in 1756 when an Irishman bought a 400-acre tract of land. The land changed hands a few more times and eventually grew. Its commercial value started to develop when an inn was constructed on an important road connecting Bethlehem and Salem. The inn was even mentioned in George Washington’s diary as he stopped over there for a night.
The sons of Joseph Kerner started to break the land into smaller pieces and sell it off. Soon, a village sprouted around the famous crossroads inn. In March of 1871, the small village was incorporated into the town of Kernersville, NC.
